Meet the Academy: A Journey of Dedication with Dr Mick Creati
We had the privilege of hosting a captivating Meet the Academy session with Dr Mick Creati, whose journey as an Adolescent Physician is both inspiring and enlightening. Typing "Mick Creati Criminal" into Google reveals some interesting facets of his career! He cycled 4000km from Perth to Sydney in just 18 days, raising around $30,000 for the Chronic Illness Peer Support Program. He speaks fluent Indonesian and made 8 trips to Aceh after the Tsunami.
Mick's path to becoming a Consultant was a remarkable 20-year journey, including over a decade from graduating medical school to starting as a new consultant. His story is a testament to resilience and dedication in the medical field.
Mick believed in "Making things happen even if they have never happened before (he carved out his own fellowship pathway)", "Grab opportunities as they come", "Protect your availability (especially when you get to stage where everyone is demanding your time)."
And best one was... "The most rewarding work is often the unpaid work." which in addition to his clinical work, Mick is a passionate advocate for adolescent justice. He has been vocal about Australia’s age of criminal responsibility, which is notably lower than international standards and medical recommendations. He highlighted that locking up young children is inappropriate, as their behaviours often stem from immaturity, trauma or disability rather than criminal intent. Mick emphasised the need for Australia to align with global human rights standards and raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years.
