Discover the Power of Narrative Medicine: Highlights from Our Recent Workshop

Published on July 22, 2024

Last Thursday on July 18, as part of our Professional Development Clinical Education series, we had an incredible Narrative Medicine workshop led by the inspiring Dr. Fiona Reilly and Dr. Mariam Tokhi. Our audience, composed of dedicated health professionals and educators, came together to explore the profound impact of storytelling in healthcare.

Highlights of the workshop included everyone sharing their writing and listening attentively to others, creating an atmosphere filled with laughter and deep connections. One participant beautifully noted, "I appreciate the wealth of stories sitting just beneath the surface at any time, how accessible they are where we can return to it."

Another attendee shared, "This is such a humbling experience. A piece of writing with a room full of wise people with different angles. It reminds me to carry curiosity when talking with anyone else."

Dr. Fiona Reilly captured the essence of our time together by saying, "Clinicians are the collectors of stories of others, and also the ones walking around with a back pocket full of ghosts."

We were reminded of the indulgence it is to stop, sit, and think during the workshop, as one participant shared, "It is an indulgence to stop and sit and think in this Narrative Medicine workshop. Let our brains work things out, rather than our checklists."
