Hear from a recent graduate of the Master of Genetic Counselling

Published on August 6, 2024

In Australasia, genetic counsellors are allied health professionals who collaborate with clinical geneticists or other medical specialists, frequently as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes other allied health professionals and/or scientists. Genetic counselling is a communication process that aims to assist individuals, couples, and families in understanding and adjusting to the consequences of a genetic contribution to a health condition.

The University of Melbourne's Master of Genetic Counselling program is a two-year, full-time blended learning course that teaches clinical practice and research skills. It draws on the expertise of tutors who are top clinicians, genetic counsellors, and researchers.

The video below features Sidney Ruthven, a recent course graduate and recipient of the Victorian Indigenous Practitioner Scholarship. This scholarship is tailored to each student and includes a range of substantial financial and academic supports to help them complete the program and transition into professional practice. The scholarship covers course fees, academic support and mentoring, conference travel, and other expenses based on individual needs.
