A collaborative success in Jakarta! We are delighted to share that the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne recently delivered a highly impactful 2-day Leadership and Learning Health System course in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics at University of Indonesia in Jakarta. Thanks to our collaborators Dr. Safira Alatas, Dr. Nina Dwi Putri, and Dr. Tartila who helped arranged a visit to RUMAH SAKIT UMUM PUSAT NASIONAL DR CIPTO MANGUNKUSUMO Hospital where we engaged with Dr. Supriyanto, President Director CEO, and Dr. Sumariyono, Director of Medical Service and Nursing.

The course was enriched by two special guest speakers who shared invaluable insights on quality improvement and innovation. Prof. Aman Pulungan inspired participants with the persistent commitment of his 10-year journey to successfully bring hydrocortisone to Indonesia, encapsulating his experience with the quote, "Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking." - Antonio Machado. Additionally, Dr. Maria Endang Sumiwi, Director General of Public Health from the Ministry of Health Indonesia, shared her three-pronged approach to Quality: Quality of Program, Quality of Service, and Quality of Organisation.

A key takeaway for participants was the profound realisation to "use tools and invest in people" rather than "use people and invest in tools."

It was inspiring to hear quotes from participants as they reflect at the end of the course:

  • "Being a leader is always to start with ourselves and start with a single and simple step."
  • "Start to think from 'why we have to do it' instead of 'what should we do next.'"
  • "Ways to improve by applying PDSA to achieve a goal. Use and analyse the data, elaborate the plan, and don't forget to evaluate."

Amy Gray, Lichin Lim, Jane Standish and Jane Hawtin extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Safira Alatas, Dr. Nina Dwi Putri, Dr. Tartila, Prof. Aman Pulungan, Dr. Maria Endang Sumiwi, and all participants for making this course a resounding success.

Here's to fostering the next generation of paediatric health leaders dedicated to advancing paediatric care and quality improvement in a learning health system!
