Master of Genetic Counselling and Master of Genomics and Health Programs 2027

Published on 20 October 2026

The Master of Genomics and Health (MGH) at the University of Melbourne is a two-year full time or part-time program preparing a workforce that is knowledgeable and skilled in practical, ethical, and socially responsible implementation of genomics in health. Students gain expert knowledge about genomics and engage in discourse around the current and potential impact on health and medicine brought by advances in genomics and genomic technologies. This course is designed for career starters and those with more established careers who wish to further their knowledge, skills and qualifications.

The Master of Genetic Counselling (MGC)  is a two-year full time program designed to teach skills in clinical practice and research. It draws on the expertise of tutors who are leading clinicians, genetic counsellors and scientists. Genetic counsellors work in multidisciplinary teams with clinical geneticists, medical specialists (such as oncologists and neurologists), nurses, social workers, and scientists helping to communicate complex genetic information and provide support for individuals and families.

Genetic Counsellors and genomics professionals work alongside people to interpret DNA in ways that are clear, respectful and empowering. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, genetic health is another way of understanding our stories; supporting individuals, families and communities to make informed decisions while honouring identity and integrity.

The University of Melbourne is pleased to offer an Indigenous Genomics scholarship generously funded through the Victorian Department of Health to support Indigenous students to undertake either the MGC or MGH program.
