Academy Rounds with Emily Bugeja on Medical Student Research

Published on September 17, 2024

In this episode of Academy Rounds, we speak with Emily Bugeja, a final year medical student at the University of Melbourne. Emily completed four weeks of rheumatology as a third year and then worked on a JIA research project with Dr Georgie Tiller and Dr Jonathan Akikusa of the Royal Children's Hospital during a break in 2023. Recently, Emily won two prizes for her oral presentation of this research at the Australian Rheumatology Association/New Zealand Rheumatology Association annual scientific meeting in Christchurch!

At the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne, we support medical student research across the Melbourne Children's Campus. This includes collaborations with clinicians from the Royal Children's Hospital, researchers from the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, and academics from the Department of Paediatrics, demonstrating a collaborative approach to paediatric research. We are thrilled to share this example of how beneficial, enjoyable, and rewarding participating in research can be for medical students. For more information, please contact: [email protected]
